Beer tasting for two in a restaurant
Why not have a mini beer-tasting over dinner? It’s easy to do a proper blind test. All you need is a friendly waiter to comply with your requests.
For a blind test, the drinks that you order are for your partner to taste and vice versa. If your partner doesn’t drink beer, that’s OK too - let your partner order the beers for you and you can do your very own tasting!
Items you will need
- Labels (rubber bands can be very useful for this purpose!)
- 2 pens
- 2 pieces of paper
- Beer scorecards
Preparation and detailed instructions
Here’s how you do it:
- Write down the names of the beers on a piece of paper and hand it to the waiter.
- Order 2 beers for your partner, without letting them know what you are ordering.
- Ask the waiter to serve the beer in identical glasses and to mark one glass by putting the rubber band around it.
- Ask the waiter to indicate which beer has the rubber band around the glass on the piece of paper.
- Take the piece of paper back without showing your partner, until after the tasting is complete.
Your partner is to do the exact same thing (if they are participating in the mutual beer tasting).
Each person will only taste the beers purchased by their partner. As you taste each beer, note down your impressions on the scorecard. Take a sip of water in between tasting each beer. You may also like to take note of which beer best complements your meal.

The “Big Reveal”
When you’ve tasted all beers, it’s time for the “big reveal” where you swap master lists and find out which beer was which. It’s a lot of fun to compare notes, and see whether you agree with your partner’s findings!
Remember to come back to tastebeer.com.au and submit YOUR findings. We’ve got over 61 beers listed, so you’re bound to find some beers to add your comments, and of course you’re welcome to submit completely new reviews as well.
